Baby’s First Dental Visit

 

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) are very clear on the timing of baby’s first dental visit. All children should have their first dental visit by age 1 (read here). The baby’s first dental visit serves many functions and benefits.

 

Education Session for Parents

Parents want to do what is best for their baby. But if you do not have the most up-to date information, then you will not be able to do what is best for your child. At the baby’s first dental visit with a pediatric dentist, the parents will have a chance to discuss how to best take care of children’s teeth. We discuss many different topics in depth, covering the topics including but not limited to: breast feeding, bottle feeding, nighttime feeding, brushing technique, when to start flossing, thumb sucking habits, soother habits, fluoride in water and toothpaste, how to deal with an uncooperative child when brushing, ideal time to wean your child off soother, tongue-tie, lip-tie, etc.

 

Prevention Session for Your Child

We will check for cavities, gum disease, growth and development of jaw. Cavities are the most common disease in American children. Prevention of cavities is much better and easier than fixing cavities. It is important for your child to become comfortable in a dental office and build a positive relationship with a dentist and dental staff to last a lifetime.

 

Establishing a Dental Home

A dental home can a place where all aspects of oral health are discussed in depth, educating parents on issues impacting your children’s teeth. Pediatric dentists specialize in providing a dental home for infants, toddlers and children. They are the best at delivering comprehensive, continuous, family-oriented care for your children’s teeth. Pediatric dentists are like pediatricians of dentistry. They are family dentists for children. Having a dental home is the important first step in making sure your kid’s teeth stay cavity-free and is highly recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.  A dental home can be especially important in a case of emergency. In this stressful situation, you will know who to contact and your child will already be comfortable with the dentist.

Your Role During the Visit

You will hold your baby in your lap while we exam your child in knee-to-knee position (Not sure what it is? Watch a video here). You holding your baby helps with the fear and anxiety. We will be able to examine your baby’s teeth thoroughly in knee-to-knee position.
